Dowry harassment: Tamil woman found hanging; husband arrested

THRIKKAKKARA: Unable to bear the constant harassment from her husband over the remaining dowry, a Tamil woman committed suicide in Ernakulam on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as Madurai native Kanimozhi (24). She was found hanging inside a rented house in Vathuruthy in Ernakulam. Following this, Kanimozhi's husband Karthik was arrested by the Ernakulam Harbour police.

The couple got married 5 years ago. Although Kanimozhi's family had initially offered 10 sovereigns of gold as dowry, only four sovereigns were handed over to Karthik. It is learnt that Kanimozhi had tried to commit suicide three years ago as she was unable to bear the torture. They have a three-and-a-half-year-old son.

On Thursday morning, Karthik left for work after quarreling with Kanimozhi. Following this, she moved to the rented house in which her parents lived and committed suicide there. There was no one in the house as her parents had gone to work. The body was shifted to the mortuary after the inquest. The post mortem will take place on Friday.
