THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The IMA Kerala unit has come to the fore against the Medical Commission guideline that MBBS students should be required to undergo mandatory AYUSH training. Yesterday's working committee meeting passed a resolution calling for the decision to be reversed.
Allopathic doctors argue that the decision was ill-intentioned. Allopathic doctors have not yet accepted the earlier suggestion that Ayurvedic PG doctors should be given surgical training. In that situation, allopaths are worried that if AYUSH training is made compulsory for MBBS students, they will have to give in to it.
At the same time, a section of doctors on both sides say that the new proposal will ensure the unity between allopathy and AYUSH.
According to the guidelines of the National Medical Commission, students who have completed MBBS should be trained in AYUSH treatments as part of their internship. Students can choose one of the treatments like Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Siddha, Unani and Yoga.
