Recommendation to change uniform of prisoners; pants for men and churidar for women

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A recommendation has been made to change the uniform of male and female prisoners in prisons in the state. The recommendation of Mission 2030 submitted by the Prisons Department to the government on the plans to be implemented in prisons within the next ten years is to provide men with shirts and pants and women with churidar and kurta. At present, male prisoners wear dhotis and shirts, while women wear dhotis and skirts. It is also recommended that all prisoners should be provided with bedding, bedsheets, pillows, mosquito nets, blankets, toothpaste and brushes. Prison officials have been invited to comment on 10 projects that need to be prioritized. The final decision will be taken after the government examines
the recommendation.

  • Prioritize the opening of more prisons to improve the living conditions of prisoners and increase their salaries.
  • Create more value added products using prisons' human resources, set up a prison hospital, and make Thiruvananthapuram Central Jail a model prison
  • Strengthen sanatorium, correctional wing for mentally ill prisoners and increase training facilities for staff
  • Modernize the production units in the prisons and brand and market the best quality products
  • Manufacture hand wash, car wash and floor cleaners in existing soap and phenol units.
  • Start laterite tile production in the stone cutting unit of Cheemeni Open Jail and start cashew processing unit
