KOLKATA: Sushmita Deb, who resigned the chief of Mahila Congress post as well as the primary membership of the party has joined the Trinamool Congress. Senior Congress leaders are shocked by the unexpected resignation of Sushmita. Trinamool Congress sources confirmed the news and posted a picture of Sushmita Deb with party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien on social media.

In a letter to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Sushmita said she wished to begin a new chapter in her life of public service and would always cherish her three decades long association with the Congress.

However, Sushmita Deb's resignation surprised many senior party leaders. Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal criticized the party for moving on with eyes wide shut. Manish Tiwari MP termed the incident as unfortunate. Party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said Sushmita is mature enough to take her own decisions.

Meantime, party sources dismissed the claim that her resignation was prompted by a dispute over seat-sharing in Assam.
