THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has criticized the Central government's decision to remove Variyan Kunnathu Kunjahammed Haji and others from the list of freedom fighters.

Variyan Kunnathu Kunjahammed Haji and his colleagues who led the Malabar agrarian uprising were widely recognized as freedom fighters. The CM said that the basis for the current controversy was the Centre's removal of them from the list of freedom fighters.

Such an approach was taken by a group of people who had no understanding of the Indian independence movement. The Indian independence movement was not something that happened in one way. It includes tolerant struggles, individual satyagrahas, mass movements, organized struggles of peasants and workers, and armed struggles. When different political parties and ideologies carry out such struggles, they all have the same goal. It was to expel the British from this country. Since then, many have had differing opinions on what kind of governance should be created. No one has the right to determine that they are not part of the freedom struggle because they hold such views. We need to adopt this general view in this regard.

It was Muhammad Abdul Rahman who called the struggle the Malabar Rebellion. The Communists pointed out the internal agricultural problems and assessed it as the agrarian revolt in Malabar. No one can deny that the Malabar Rebellion of 1921 was a struggle against the British. At the same time, it also developed into a struggle against those who aided the British. It is a fact that some people have tried to take the Malabar riots to the wrong level in some areas. It has to be seen as such.

It is a historical fact that Variyan Kunnathu opposed all the religious people who helped them as part of the anti-British struggle. They killed Khan Bahadur Chekkutty and Thayil Moineen. At the same time, historical records show that Variyan Kunnathu took a strong stand against those who killed innocent people. Madhava Menon, who wrote about the Malabar Rebellion, has written about the situation in which Variyan Kunnathu visited. According to Madhava Menon, Variyan Kunnathu said that he had come to end the wrongdoings that had taken place there.

Sardar Chandroth records this in 1946 in Deshabhimani. The vision was for a nation that would unite all sections, including Hindus. Chandroth records that he said that religious nationalism was not his goal.

The Hindu newspaper has recently republished a letter written by Variyan Kunnathu clarifying the issue as the propaganda that the Malabar riots were the result of Hindu-Muslim conflict spread across the country. In it, Variyan Kunnathu strongly denies this allegation.

Even in the autobiography of E. Moidu Moulavi, the style of portraying Variyan Kunnathu as a communalist is not adopted. The Chief Minister said that history reminds us that Variyan Kunnathu took such an anti-British stance and opposed religious nationalism and also prevented and punished different movements.
