Nipah: Health department to conduct comprehensive examination, those with symptoms will be counted, details of dead will be collected

nipah-virus

KOZHIKODE: The health department is preparing for a comprehensive survey at the Chathamangalam panchayat in Kozhikode where a 12-year-old boy died of nipah virus. The details of those having fever in the area will be collected. In addition, it has been decided to collect the details of those who have died within a month with symptoms similar to those of nipah.

It was also decided to completely close the three-kilometer around the area where the dead boy’s home is located. Permission for travel will be given only to those in need. Steps are being taken to collect the swab samples to trace the source of the virus. Samples will also be collected from domestic animals, bats and wild boar in the area.

Meantime, a special section for nipah examination at Kozhikode Medical College will start functioning today. The lab is being set up by seven experts of Pune Institute of Virology. They will also impart training in collection of swabs to those in the field of microbiology and testing. There is a virology lab in the medical college presently. Although there is a facility to test Covid and others, tests for nipah is not here presently. Proceedings for this have been underway since nipah was reported earlier in the district but reached nowhere.
