Congress to name a woman as CM in Punjab; not interested, says Ambika Soni

punjab

CHANDIGARH: A report has claimed that the Congress leadership might name Ambika Soni as the new Chief Minister of Punjab. However, party sources said that Ambika Soni did not react favorably to the High Command's decision to make her the Chief Minister. According to reports, Ambika Soni has said that she does not want to be the Chief Minister of Punjab at this time and that only a Sikh should be the Chief Minister of Punjab. A decision on the new chief minister is likely to be taken at today's parliamentary party meeting. Senior Congress leader Ajay Maken has said that the party will unanimously accept whoever Sonia Gandhi chooses.

Punjab is one of the few Congress-ruled states in the country. The Punjab assembly elections will be held in February or March 2022. Opinion polls claimed that the Aam Aadmi Party is likely to emerge as the single-largest party in the elections. The infighting in the party was the main reason for the decline of Congress in the state. The rift between Punjab PCC president Navjot Singh Sidhu and Amarinder Singh has resulted in the resignation of Amarinder Singh.

Amarinder Singh had tendered his resignation to the governor on Saturday after the high command convened a meeting of the Punjab Congress Legislative Party (CLP) with the aim of changing the chief minister. Following this, Punjab Congress legislators authorised party president Sonia Gandhi to pick a new CLP leader.
