THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Education minister V Sivankutty on Monday said that the government will conduct taluk and school-level inspections to find the availability of plus one seats in the state. The minister also said that the government will provide opportunities for all to pursue higher studies.
"After the completion of the second allotment on the 23rd, the issues due to which there is a shortage of seats will be identified and resolved. Several students were unable to secure admission for the desired seat and nearest school as there was a large number of students who got A+," the minister said. However, the Opposition staged a walkout, pointing out that nearly ten thousand students were denied admission even after the completion of the second allotment.
Opposition Leader VD Satheesan said that thousands of students, who secured A+ in every subject, were struggling to get plus one admission in the state. However, the minister said that only 85,316 candidates were eligible for admission and that 69,642 candidates were admitted in the second allotment.
Satheesan retorted that the minister was reading only the figures given by the officials. "The minister is only repeating his earlier replies. The government should try to alleviate the anxiety of the children by increasing the number of seats. Earlier, the minister had said that 39,119 seats would be left after the second allotment. Now, only 655 seats remain on merit. Even those who got A + in all subjects are in a position to rely on unaided schools," he added. The opposition then staged a walkout by pointing out that no action was taken to address the plight of the students.
