Today marks 75th anniversary of Punnapra-Vayalar uprising, Medini's red salute to those bloody memories

Revolutionary singer PK Medini is reminiscing at the age of 88 at her daughter Hansa's house in Ambalappuzha.

75 years after the first firing of the Punnapra-Vayalar agitation, she is still at the forefront of the struggle as an unquenchable flame of fighting spirit. Medini hoisted flag at the Valiya Chudukadu Martyrs' Mandapam in Alappuzha yesterday as part of the 75th anniversary. She is the only woman to receive a pension for Vayalar fighters even now.

Medini was 13 years old at the time of the Punnapra-Vayalar agitation. She lost her mother at the age of twelve. She was expelled from school for failing to pay fees. Her family's only income was the small money brother Sarangapani got through sewing.

A visit to the Workers 'Cultural Center near the Travancore Coir Factory Workers' Union attracted Medini to the revolutionary anthem. It was with the advent of the art movement that the red flag was raised against exploitation. The first public performance was at the Kidangamparamba ground in Alappuzha.
