KOLLAM: The Cabinet yesterday decided to create 118 posts in the first phase, including 56 academic posts and 62 non-academic posts, at Sree Narayana Guru Open University.
The action was expedited following the news published by 'Kerala Kaumudi' last Monday that the delay in the appointment of teachers was creating a situation where the course could not be started in the university which started on October 2, 2020.
The university has submitted a recommendation to the government and the UGC to start 20 undergraduate courses and 9 postgraduate courses. Five teachers are required for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in a subject and three for undergraduate courses. The University Syndicate will determine the courses to be started in the first phase in proportion to the teaching posts currently allotted. Teachers will then be hired to prepare the study materials required for the courses.
The university is currently UGC accredited. New courses also need UGC approval. The application should be accompanied by teacher information and prepared study materials.
Hope on next June
A window will open on the UGC website in December to submit an application. It is hoped that the course will start next June after submitting the application in time and completing the UGC inspection. The Cabinet has decided to make appointments on contract and deputation basis in the sanctioned posts.
