NEW DELHI: With the Union Government planning to introduce a bill to raise the minimum age for marriage of women from 18 to 21, Samajwadi Party MP ST Hasan has come up opposing the bill. Speaking to the media, he said that girls should get married when they attain the age of fertility. He also said that there was nothing wrong with a girl getting married even at the age of 16.
"Girls should be married when they attain the age of fertility There is nothing wrong if a mature girl is married at 16. If she can vote at age of 18, why can't she marry?" Hasan said.
Meanwhile, several people, including CPM leader Brinda Karat, have come forward against the Centre's decision. Brinda Karat said that the decision was not conducive to women's empowerment and that the government should give priority to ensuring nutrition and education for women.
