Sharp surge of Covid in country; daily cases cross three lakhs two days in a row

NEW DELHI: Covid spread is very critical in the country. More than three lakh Covid cases have been reported in the last 24 hours. The daily cases have crossed three lakhs for two days in a row. There were more than 350 Covid deaths yesterday alone.

Karnataka reported the highest number of cases yesterday. A total of 47,754 cases were reported in the last 24 hours, raising the overall cases to 33,76,963. As of now, 38,515 Covid deaths have been confirmed.

Kerala reported 46,387 Covid cases yesterday with Test Positivity Rate (TPR) crossing 40 percent. Currently, 1,68,383 are under treatment in the state. The virus spread continues to remain critical in Maharashtra with 46,197 new cases confirmed yesterday.

Meantime, union health secretary Rajesh Bhushan said that six states including Kerala are ‘states of concern’. The centre has sent special health teams to these states to review the situation. Vaccines have been crucial in withstanding the Omicron induced third wave, he added. More than 160 crore vaccine doses have been administered in the country. Around 70 percent of the people are fully vaccinated whereas, more than 90 percent are yet to take the second dose.
