Solar allegation: Court rules in favour of Chandy in case against Achuthanandan, orders to pay Rs 10.10 lakh as compensation

vs-oommen

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The court has ruled in favour of former chief minister Oommen Chandy in the case filed against VS Achuthanandan in connection with the solar case. Oommen Chandy had approached the court against the statement of VS that Oommen Chandy was involved in corruption in the solar case. The Thiruvananthapuram Principal sub-court has ordered VS to pay Rs 10,10,000 as compensation to Oommen Chandy.

The incident took place in 2013. VS, who was the Leader of the Opposition at the time, made the allegations against the then Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in an interview. He alleged that Oommen Chandy formed a company and committed fraud.

Oommen Chandy filed a defamation suit against the Leader of the Opposition in 2014. Oommen Chandy's lawyer had demanded Rs 1 crore in the notice seeking withdrawal of the statement. When the case was filed in the court, he demanded Rs 10,10,000 as compensation. Apart from compensation, VS Achuthanandan has to pay 6 percent interest to Oommen Chandy. But VS's lawyer said they have decided to continue the legal battle and would file an appeal in the district court against the sub-court verdict.
