mullaperiyar

NEW DELHI: The Central Water Commission (CWC) has asked the Supreme Court to conduct a new safety inspection at the Mullaperiyar Dam. The commission, in its report to the apex court, said the inspection by the oversight committee had found that the safety is "satisfactory".

The CWC has filed a new status report on the Mullaperiyar Dam petition, which is scheduled to begin hearing in the Supreme Court in the second week of February. The new report was filed by Rakesh Kumar Gautam, Deputy Director of CWC.

The previous safety test of the dam was conducted scientifically in the period 2010 - 2012. The inspection was carried out by the Water Commission and various agencies and experts of the Central Government. In that inspection it was found that the dam was safe. But since then no comprehensive scientific tests have taken place. The status report also states that Kerala does not give permission to cut down trees to strengthen the dam.
