Stethoscope to detect leaks in pipeline

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Don't be surprised if you see engineers of the Water Authority coming in with a stethoscope in hand. It is a 'water stethoscope' to detect drinking water leaks and blockages in the pipeline.

Discussions are in progress to use the device which became successful in Kochi across the state. In order to detect any leaks or blockages in the pipeline, generally they dig the place. The water stethoscope accurately detects obstructions and leaks, so digging that particular area can solve the problem.

The function is as follows:

A water stethoscope is a pressure gauge that can measure up to 0.01 kilograms per sq. cm. A small hose is attached to the end of this gauge. The other end of the hose can be connected to the joint of the pipeline.

To find the obstacle

The drinking water pipe will have the same pressure.

Interruption is caused by pressure difference and settling down of particles.

There will be a difference between the pre-reading and post-reading before and after the block.

Make sure there is a block on the line.

To find the leak

The pressure in the pipeline will be recorded using a stethoscope. After one month the pressure in the line will be checked again

If the level is lower than the first, it is a leak.

120 crore liters
The water loss during distribution is 120 crore liters per day. This results in a loss of Rs 262 crore per annum. About 45% of the water produced is lost through leakage. The national average is 15 percent.

Price: Rs 3000

Purchased: 40 nos

The stethoscope is useful. Training will be given to employees, said Jochan Joseph, Superintendent Engineer
