BENGALURU: Eleven Malayali players, including former Indian cricketer S Sreesanth, took part in the IPL auction this year. Of these, only Vishnu Vinod, KM Asif and Basil Thampi were selected for the IPL teams. While Mumbai Indians acquired Basil Thampi in yesterday's auction, KM Asif was acquired by Chennai Super Kings. Asif was the star of Chennai Super Kings last season as well.

Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad bought Vishnu Vinod for Rs 50 lakh in an auction held today. Vishnu Vinod, who was listed with a base price of Rs 20 lakh, was also spotted by the Mumbai Indians and the bid price reached Rs 50 lakh.

Vishnu Vinod has been selected as the back up of Ishan Kishan, the most expensive player at the auction. At present, Ishant Kishan is the only wicket-keeper-batsman in Mumbai. Sunrisers Hyderabad were also in a similar situation. Vishnu Vinod will replace West Indies' Nicholas Pooran, who was acquired for Rs 10.75 crore.

For Vishnu, this IPL is likely to be a turning point in his career. The Hyderabad management will not hesitate to give a chance to Vishnu if Puran is unable to find form at the start of the IPL. Vishnu's batting style is favourable to T20 cricket as he has done well for Kerala in Mushtaq Ali and Vijay Hazare tournaments.

At the same time, Sreesanth's name was not even mentioned in the auction. His name was included in the accelerated list of the auction and it would be called only if any team shows interest in the player. But Sreesanth's name was not even called as none of the teams showed interest.
