GURUVAYUR: Elephant Ravi Krishnan won the 'Anayottam' (elephant race) which marked the beginning of the annual festival at the Guruvayur temple. Elephant Devadas came in second.

Among the participating elephants, the elder tusker Vishnu also completed the race. Due to Covid norms, only 3 elephants participated.

When the clock struck three in the temple, the amulets placed on the flagpole were taken by the traditional heir, Kandiyoorpattam Nambeesan and handed it over to Mathempattu Nambiar. He handed it over to the mahouts. Later, the mahouts ran to the elephants waiting for the race and decorated them with amulets. The elephant race started when Shashi Marar sounded the conch.

Ravi Krishna came first and went around the temple seven times and bowed to Guruvayoorappan. Ravi Krishna will receive special treatment inside the temple for another ten days. Only on the evening of the ninth festival Ravi Krishna will be taken outside the temple for the deity's procession.

Ravi Krishnan, 44, was offered to the temple on June 25, 2003 by Sivasankaran, a native of Thrithala, Palakkad. T Sreekumar is the tusker's mahout. CP Vinod Kumar and CV Sudhir are the co-mahouts. Devaswom Board members Mallissery Parameswaran Namboodiripad, Advocate KV Mohanakrishnan, Administrator KP Vinayan and Municipal Council Chairman M Krishnadas were present on the occasion.
