KSEB to operate seaplane on dams, invites letter of interest

seaplane-

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: KSEB is all set to test the seaplane project with the help of private agencies, which will help in the development of tourism in the state. The board is inviting letter of interest from prospective private parties. Seaplane, an aircraft which can land both on land and sea, will be tested at KSEB's dams. Initially, it will be connected to Mattupetty Dam in Munnar and Banasura Sagar Dam in Wayanad. The aim is to attract more tourists.

Earlier, the tourism department had tried to run seaplanes in the backwaters but it did not materialize due to opposition from fishermen. There were concerns that it would disrupt inland fisheries. Even a test flight was done. KSEB is coming up with the project considering that there will be no opposition when it comes to dams.

Management will be outsourced to private agencies. They will be responsible for obtaining permits, infrastructure and security licenses, including from civil aviation. They should also arrange flights. A 14-seater aircraft will be flown initially. It will cost Rs 10 crore to set up the infrastructure. It is learned that some institutions have approached KSEB.

There will be income, but no expense

The project will be implemented in such a way that KSEB will receive revenue without any financial liability. The agreement stipulates that a fixed percentage of the ticket price charged by the private agencies for boarding the seaplane be paid to KSEB.
