NEW DELHI: Although India is maintaining good relations with Russia despite US sanctions, India's airline Air India has decided to suspend services between the two countries. Air India operates two weekly flights from New Delhi to Moscow and back. Now Air India has decided to temporarily suspend both these services.
The Moscow-New Delhi flight service has been affected by a new rule by international insurance companies that does not provide insurance coverage for flights departing from Russia under the revised insurance rules. The existing insurance policy of Air India expired on March 1 last year and the new policy will be taken up from April 1. Air India has suspended flights to Russiasice then. Insurance companies are likely to cover services to Russia only if things return to normal after the end of the Russia-Ukraine war. Until then, the situation is likely to continue.
With the suspension of Air India's service, now there are no international flights between India and Russia. Earlier, Aeroflot, a Russian airline, operated a service from Moscow to New Delhi, but it was suspended due to war fear. Currently, travelers from India can only fly to Russia via a connection flight through any of the airports in Tashkent, Istanbul, Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
