ISLAMABAD: Shehbaz Sharif, 70, has been elected the 23rd Prime Minister of Pakistan after a period of uncertainty. Shehbaz Sharif is the younger brother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
The swearing-in will take place this evening. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan and PTI members resigned before the election. They also boycotted the election. Imran Khan has announced his resignation from the National Assembly on social media. Shehbaz seized power with the support of 174 members. After the election, Shahbaz said that God had saved Pakistan.
Imran Khan is the first Prime Minister in the history of Pakistan to be ousted by a no-confidence vote. Imran Khan served as the Prime Minister for three years and seven months.
