Despite explanations, interfaith marriage row fails to subside

KOZHIKODE: Despite the explanations, the controversy in Kodancherry regarding interfaith marriage failed to subside. DYFI leader Shejin-Joyce's marriage after eloping would have been another interfaith marriage. But former MLA George M Thomas' use of jihad has sparked controversy.

When things went awry, George M. Thomas corrected himself by saying that referred to it as a tendency to hurt a community, but the controversy did not end there. Joysna's father Joseph alleged that his daughter was trapped. "If she has such a relationship, she has the freedom to speak openly at home. Another marriage was fixed with the consent of the daughter. Even at that time, the daughter did not say anything", he said. He also alleges that his daughter was forced to say that she left on her own free will.

Meanwhile, a Jamaat-e-Islami has sent a lawyer's notice against George M. Thomas. The notice was issued against allegations that college students in Kerala were being recruited for ISIS and other organizations. The notice said that groups like Jamaat-e-Islami are behind such activities. The notice also said that the Jamaat-e-Islami, which works to maintain a friendly atmosphere between different religious communities, was deliberately linked to communal practices such as love jihad.
