A second chance of life to E V Jose who destroyed himself to alcoholism, now lives happily with family

kk

KOCHI: Kalamassery native E.V. Jose's condition was worse than that of character Murali from film 'Vellam'. He started drinking alcohol at the age of 15 and sold his house and land to get money for drinking. His wife left him, his son committed suicide, still he didn't change. But now Jose has a second life with the help of some good people.

He stopped studying in standard ten and did various jobs such as scrap picking and container packing. Due to his drinking habit, he was taken to hospitals and mental health centres. But he remained the same. His wife left along with his son and she later remarried.

He sold more than 35 cents of his own land, 50 cents of paddy field and two houses to drink with his friends. He even got into fighting for money. When he lost his job one by one and ran out of money, his friends also left him.

Jose did not stop drinking even when his depressed son committed suicide. Jose's friend Devassy took him to a meditation center in Kottayam in 2005 with a critical leg injury. The routine and prayers brought Jose back to life. He quit drinking. Went to work, started scrap sale and acquired home and property through a real estate transaction. Jose is now a PWD contractor.

He remarried Kozhikode native Julie in 2014, who was a widow and mother of nine-year old girl. Now they are leading a happy life. Jose has been active in activities against alcoholism since quitting. "Alcohol destroys lives. Once you get addcited, you may not even come back.", says E.V. Jose
