Increase in Covid cases; Tamil Nadu makes masks mandatory; Rs 500 fine

CHENNAI: Following the recent surge in Covid cases, the Tamil Nadu government has made it mandatory to wear masks in public places in the state. The authorities also decided to impose a fine of Rs 500 on those who don't wear a face mask. The move comes after 30 students at IIT Madras tested positive for Covid.

According to the Tamil Nadu health department, the decision to impose a fine was taken against the backdrop of laxity shown among people in adhering to covid-19 protocols while in public places There has been an increase in Covid cases in Tamil Nadu in the last two days. 39 people tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours. With this, the number of Covid tests conducted in the state per day has been increased from 18,000 to 25,000.
