azhimala

VIZHINJAM: The waves have taken numerous lives in Azhimala. The locals complain that the plans, which are announced only when accidents occur, are not implemented. Two life guards have been appointed upon constant demands by the Azhimala Temple authorities. However, it is impossible to restrict the crowd during busy times. In March last year, two youths were found dead here. Following which, the tourism department had planned to arrange security in the coastal areas.

The lack of adequate security or warning boards in the area, which is visited by numerous tourists and pilgrims daily, has led to complaints. The vast coconut groves and rocky areas are in such a way that anyone can enter the area.

The locals are of the opinion that a safety fence should be constructed to prevent people from entering the danger zones. It is expected to put an end to the anti-social elements in the area as well.

Danger amid rocks

The huge rocks nearby the coastal areas may not seem dangerous on sight and are a major tourist attraction. From the top, one can enjoy panoramic views and sea breezes. The area is suitable for taking selfies and click pictures too. However, waves are the villains. If a person falls, then there is a good chance to hit a rock and die. In addition, there is also a strong current in the water.

Couples’ favourite spot

As it is less crowded location, a lot of lovers arrive here to enjoy nature’s beauty. There are no life guards or protective fences here. Hence, even if they are in danger, the outside world may not know it. This could delay the rescue operations as well. Youths, who come in groups, often meet with accidents here. A youth from Kollam, who came with his gang to shoot video, had died the other day.

Life guards should be increased

The number of life guards should be increased. Their service should be made available in rocky areas. There are complaints that the youths, who arrive in groups, do not follow instructions. Demands have also been made for police patrolling in the morning.

Warning boards should be set up

Visitors from other districts may not know about the danger in the place. The rocks are slippery. The people, who climb onto the rocks without knowing the danger, are the ones who meet with accidents. Seven lives were lost in two years

A coastal police aid should be set up centered around Azhimala beach. Safety fences should be set up and the travel to danger zones should be curbed, said S Vijesh, general secretary, Azhimala Shiva Temple

It is not practical to set up safety fences in the coast. Several requests have been submitted for a police aid post. However, no action has been taken, said Jerome Das, Kottukal panchayat president.
