THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The World Health Organization's (WHO) honour is a well-deserved recognition, said Health Minister Veena George. The minister congratulated all the ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) workers in the state.

ASHA workers play a major role in the health sector. They are the ones who provide services at the field levels. There are currently 21,694 ASHA workers in all the districts of the state, 4205 in rural areas, 549 in urban areas and a total of 26,448 in tribal areas. During the Covid period, ASHA workers have always been engaged in prevention activities. They have been giving special importance to Covid prevention activities over normal activities. While the world honours ASHA workers, every Asha worker in Kerala is feeling proud, said the minister.

To create awareness on health, promote good health practices, provide information to the community on determinants of health such as nutrition, basic sanitation and hygienic practices, counsel women on birth preparedness, importance of safe delivery, breast-feeding and complementary feeding, mobilise the community and facilitate them in accessing health related services among others are the major functions of an ASHA worker.
