Blast in Rajasthan: Will RS polls become the final nail in Congress’ coffin? Discontent brews over candidature

congress

NEW DELHI: Protests have erupted in the Congress over the party’s list of candidates for the Rajya Sabha polls. Reports hint that the party is in the verge of a blast. There are reports that popular leaders will leave the party in protest of granting candidacy to close ones of high-ranking leaders, excluding others. The Congress is planning to win at least 10 of the 57 seats in the coming elections. However, the results will be dependent on how well the problems are solved.

Protests have intensified in the Congress-ruled state of Rajasthan. There are four RS seats in the state. This is where the party can win more. However, no leader from the state has been given seats here. Currently, leaders from other states namely Randeep Singh Surjewala, Mukul Wasnik and Pramod Tiwari have been made candidates from Rajasthan. This has led to huge protests. The party’s state component has termed the current list unacceptable and demanded to withdraw it. Reportedly, the leadership may not agree to it. The situation is likely to cause more problems and could even result in loss of governance in the already troubled state. The leaders have warned of setbacks if the state leaders are not considered for candidature.

Protests are also rife in Gujarat alleging exclusion of people from backward castes. Jitendra Bhagel, who is in charge of Gujarat, has come out with the question of how many candidates from backward communities are in the list. Gujarat is set to face the next assembly polls shortly. A majority of the party’s prominent leaders are currently in the BJP camp. If the issues are not settled soon, then the party could be completely wiped out from the state.

In addition, actor-turned politician Nagma has also come forward in protest of not getting a seat in Maharashtra. “Sonia Ji our Congress president had personally committed to accommodating me in RS in 2003/04 when I joined Congress party on her behest we weren’t in power then. Since then it’s been 18 years they didn’t find an opportunity. Mr Imran is accommodated in RS from Maharashtra. I ask am I less deserving,” she wrote on Twitter. The seat in Maharashtra has been given to Priyanka Gandhi’s confidant poet-turned politician Imran Pratapgarhi, leading to public protests.

The G-23 leaders, who had protested against the leadership, have also been completely exempted from the list. Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma were not nominated to the list. However, Mukul Wasnik, who recently took a soft approach towards the leadership, has been given a seat.

The elections to 57 Rajya Sabha seats in 15 states will be held on June 10. The vacancies are: Uttar Pradesh – 11, Tamil Nadu – 6, Maharashtra-6, Bihar-5, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan - 4 each, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha – 3 each, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Jharkhand, Haryana – 2 each and Uttarakhand – 1.
