KOCHI: UDF candidate Uma Thomas has got a jubilant win in the Thrikkakara by-election. She has got a majority of 25,015 votes. This is a record majority in the history of the constituency. She surpassed Benny Bahnan's majority of 22,406 votes in 2011. She surpassed her husband’s lead of 14,329 votes in the sixth round itself. LDF candidate Jo Joseph got 47752 votes and BJP came third with 12,955 votes.

Uma's historic victory was after taking a clear lead from the beginning of the counting. The lead obtained when the postal votes were counted, increased gradually and reached the victory peak. The LDF was able to advance only in a few booths. Although the LDF could not win, Uma made a move that shattered their hopes. The election results show that the people rejected all the steps taken by the LDF by bringing K V Thomas, chief minister, ministers and the party as a whole. The BJP's strategy of bringing P C George to get votes also did not materialize.

Although Thrikkakara is a strong UDF constituency and the respect for P T Thomas has contributed to Uma's victory, the main reason for the UDF's victory is that it was able to hold on to the upper hand vote held at the beginning of the nomination process and the acceptance of Uma Thomas. The people of the constituency accepted Uma as one of them. She won the people without making any controversies and intervened with everyone by her innocent smiles. She proved that she is a politician or a person who is better at responding to issues than politicians. All this clean bowled the LDF who came to hit a century.

The result that has just come is completely unexpected. People’s verdict is the opinion of the people and we accept it. This should not have happened according to the way the party had been working in the constituency for the last one month. Although unbelievable, we accept this defeat. The election was led by us and not by the chief minister,’ said CPM district secretary C N Mohanan.

LDF candidate Dr Jo Joseph said that he did well the task assigned to him by the party. Congratulations to the winner. I sincerely did as possible the task assigned by the party. Have not seen the election personally. The party will look into other matters after the counting of votes is completed. I was confident until this moment. Thank everyone who stood with me. There is no need to comment personally on the defeat. The party will look into the matter after the counting of votes is completed. Fully accepts defeat. There is still time to examine the reasons. The party will not go backward with just one defeat. It is a good thing that Uma has won the hearts of Thrikkakara. The defeat was unexpected,’ said Jo Joseph.
