PARIS: An environmental activist protests at the French Open Grand Slam tennis. The activist, a French citizen entered the court during semi-final match between Marin Cilic of Croatia and Norwegian Casper Ruud and interrupted it for about 15 minutes. The girl was wearing a t-shirt that read, "We have 1028 days left."
The young woman unexpectedly entered the court when Caspar Ruud took a 4-1 lead against Cilic in the third set. She entered the court from among the audience, glued her neck to the set and sat motionless on the court. Authorities arrived but the woman refused to leave the court. The match was interrupted for 15 minutes due to this. Caspar Ruud and Cilic were removed from court for security reasons.
The words on the woman's t-shirt was from the report on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The latest IPCC report found that greenhouse emissions are on the rise and that current plans to tackle climate change are not enough to limit heat to 1.5 degrees Celsius above industry pre-existing levels. Scientists are trying to avoid even more devastating consequences, as per the report. The woman intends to show that the destruction of the earth will begin in 1028 days.
