Heavy rain with thunderstorms will continue in the state till June 8, issues warning to public

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Central Meteorological Department has warned of possible isolated thundershowers in the state till June 8. In view of this situation, the State Disaster Management Authority has issued a warning to the public. The notice also said that such precautions should not be avoided as the lightning is not visible.

Move to a safe building as soon as you see the first sign of lightning

Close windows and doors during thunderstorms and do not stand near doors and windows. Sit inside the building and do not touch the wall or floor.

Disconnect household appliances. Avoid using electrical equipments and telephone during thunderstorms. If the atmosphere is cloudy, children should avoid playing in the open air or on the terrace.

Do not stand under trees during thunderstorms. Vehicles should not be parked under the trees. Stay inside the vehicle during thunderstorms. Travel on bicycles, bikes and tractors should be avoided during thunderstorms and should seek refuge in a safe building until the thunderstorm ends.

When it rains, do not go to the terrace or yard to pick up clothes during thunderstorms. Avoid bathing during thunderstorms. Do not go for fishing or bathing in the water during thunderstorms. Avoid flying kites.

Lightning conductors can be installed on top of buildings to protect them from lightning. Surge protector can be fitted for safety of electrical equipment. Lightning strikes can cause burns, loss of vision or hearing, or even a heart attack. There is no current in the body of the person who has been struck by lightning. So do not hesitate to give first aid. The first thirty seconds after the lightning strike are the most important time to save a life.
