NEW DELHI: The Reserve Bank of India has clarified that they will not replace the image of Mahatma Gandhi from currency notes. There won't be any change in the existing currency notes and such a suggestion is not under consideration, clarified the RBI.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued an official statement as the news to include pictures of Tagore and Abdul Kalam in currency notes came out. The design of the new watermarked notes has been prepared as per the directions of the Union Ministry of Finance.
However, it was reported that the Central Government had not given permission for printing of the notes bearing these images. With this, discussions arose as to whether the image of Gandhi would be omitted.
In 2017, the Reserve Bank's internal committee recommended that the images to be watermarked as part of a series of security measures to prevent counterfeit notes. Based on this, news came out that watermarked pictures of other leaders would also be included in the newly issued notes.
