ALAPPUZHA: The largest private museum in Kerala is a monument built by a wife for her deceased husband. The Ravi Karunakaran Memorial Museum is a 48,000 sq ft building. This two-storey museum is of the same size as Taj Mahal. This museum in Alappuzha was established by Betty Karan, Chairperson of Karan group of companies in 2006 in memory of her husband and coir businessman Ravi Karunakaran. The museum has a collection worth crores.

Ivory sculptures, crystal figures made of 24 carat gold, limited editions scupltures by famous brands, Victorian-era objects are all present in the museum.

Betty Karan has been traveling abroad regularly since she became Ravi Karunakaran's wife at the age of 18. She visited 138 countries and first visits museums. After each trip Betty returns with unique items. Ravi died in 2003 .Her daughter Lulu also helped to prepare the museum. The museum includes a collection of three generations. It is open to the public every day except Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
