NEW DELHI: After several days of uncertainties and discussions, Trinamool Congress leader Yashwant Sinha has been named the joint Opposition candidate for the presidential election. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that Sinha was elected unanimously by 17 opposition parties.
Sinha was one of the leaders who were expected to be named the Opposition's candidate. He is a political leader from Bihar and a former Union Minister of the BJP.
Taking it to Twitter, Sinha said that he was willing to contest the election. He also held talks with senior leaders, including Sharad Pawar.
I am grateful to Mamataji for the honour and prestige she bestowed on me in the TMC. Now a time has come when for a larger national cause I must step aside from the party to work for greater opposition unity. I am sure she approves of the step.
