Thieves remove five-foot-high window, break into house, steal 38 sovereigns of gold; nabbed from railway station

THRISSUR: Two interstate thieves were arrested by the police in connection with a theft of 38.5 sovereigns of gold after breaking into a locked house in Poonkunnam. The arrested have been identified as Shaik Makbul (31) and Muhammad Kausar Shaik (45), natives of West Bengal. The theft took place on June 16.

The thieves had broken a five-foot-wide window of the locked house and stole the gold, which was kept in a cupboard. The accused were caught by a special investigation team led by city police commissioner R Adithya and assistant commissioner V K Raju.

88 CCTVs examined

As part of probe, the investigation team had examined 88 CCTVs. Following which, the team received vague images of the accused. It was also found that the accused had taken a room at a lodge in the city. On recognizing that they were natives of West Bengal, the investigation team left for Bengal on June 25. Following which, their hideout was discovered amid a search in the border villages of Bangladesh. During the search, it was found that the accused had left for Kerala by train via Chennai. Later, they were nabbed from Chennai MGR Railway Station with the help of the Chennai railway police. The accused were arrested by a police team, consisting of Thrissur West SHO K C Baiju, CPOs Akhil Vishnu, K S Abheesh Anthony, C A Vibin and P C Anil Kumar.
