Bhagwant Mann and Gurpreet Kaur kept relationship under wraps for four years; Girlfriend present during swearing-in ceremony too

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Bhagwant Mann is all set to tie the knot on Thursday. The news of his wedding, which was kept under the wraps, came out only last day. Bhagwant Mann is the first Punjab politician to get married while serving as the chief minister.

Mann’s wife-to-be Dr Gurpreet Kaur is a native of Pehowa, Haryana. Not even the duo’s close relatives were informed about the wedding. The news was kept secret by both families.

According to available reports, Mann and Kaur met each other amid the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Gurpreet was seen alongside Mann during the poll campaigns. She was also present during his swearing-in ceremony. However, both of them had kept their relationship under wraps. Although, Mann’s mother and sister knew about their relationship, they decided to keep it a secret until the wedding day. Mann’s mother had insisted on his marriage soon after he sworn in as the state’s chief minister. However, the wedding plans were put on hold till the first cabinet expansion in the state. Rumours suggest that Gurpreet Kaur’s elder sister Navneet Kaur Neeru, an American citizen, had arrived in their hometown, 20 days ago, for the wedding. In addition, Kaur’s family had also moved to Mohali, six months ago.

Gurpreet is a member of a family with political roots. One of her sisters is married to the son of former cabinet minister, late Jaswinder Singh Sandhu. Her uncles are also active in politics.

The bride’s father, Inderjeet Singh, holds a Canadian citizenship. He is a former village headman and owns more than 40 acres of land. Her mother, Rajendra Kaur, is a housewife. Gurpreet’s younger sister Kamaljeet Kaur Gaggu lives in Australia.

Gurpreet Kaur had completed her medical degree in 2017 from a medical college in Ambala. She also practised in a hospital in Ambala.

This is Bhagwant Mann’s second marriage. The leader got divorced in 2015. He has two children with his first wife.

Hints suggest that leaders such as Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Raghav Chadha will attend the marriage. As both of them are Sikhs, the wedding will be held in accordance with Sikh marriage rituals.
