Wickramasinghe orders to suppress popular agitation, state of emergency declared in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO: Riots have broken out once again in Sri Lanka as President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is yet to submit his resignation. Protesters stormed into the Prime Minister's residence on Wednesday. Ranil Wickremesinghe, who installed himself as the acting president, declared a state of emergency in the country to deal with the popular uprising. He gave full powers to the Army and police to deal with the protesters. Wickramasinghe ordered to take necessary steps to restore law and order in the country Some reports claimed that police and security forces opened fire at protesters in many places.

"They are trying to prevent me from carrying out my responsibilities as Acting President. Fascists will not be allowed to take power," Wickramasinghe said.


Meanwhile, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has informed that Gotabaya Rajapaksa will submit his resignation today evening.
