NEW DELHI: Supreme Court on Wednesday granted interim bail to Alt News co-founder Muhammed Zubair. A bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud ordered that Zubair be released from jail by 6 pm today. The court's bail is in seven cases registered against Zubair.
The court also disbanded the Special Investigation Team formed by the Uttar Pradesh Police to probe the cases against Zubair. Later, all the cases, including the six cases registered against Zubair in Uttar Pradesh, were transferred to Delhi.
The court rejected the Uttar Pradesh government's request to ban Zubair from tweeting. The court pointed out that telling a journalist not to write is tantamount to telling a lawyer not to argue. The court also said that Zubair will have to face the consequences if he violates the law in the future.
The court had granted bail to Zubair in the Sitapur and Delhi cases in Uttar Pradesh. The court informed that bail has been granted in two other cases as they are cases of similar nature. The court also stated that the Delhi Special Police will investigate the case by treating the six FIRs registered in UP as a single case. The Supreme Court has told Zubair that he can approach the Delhi High Court against all cases where the FIRs against him have not been quashed.
Muhammad Zubair was arrested on June 27 for his tweet in 2018. Later, the Uttar Pradesh police filed seven more cases against him.
