Why is it necessary to link Aadhar card and Voter ID? Election Commission begins campaign, here's everything you need to know

kk

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission is planning to launch a campaign at the national level as part of linking Aadhaar Card and Voter ID. It was informed that the campaign will start from today in Maharashtra and Tripura. Linking voter ID with Aadhaar is part of preparing a transparent and accurate voter list.

The Election Laws (Amendment) Act to link voter list and Aadhaar was passed in December 2021 . This was opposed by opposition parties including Congress. Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala had approached the Supreme Court last week challenging the new law. But the Supreme Court directed him to approach the High Court.

Tripura Chief Electoral Officer Kiran Gitte said that linking Voter ID and Aadhaar is a voluntary process. "All voters should cooperate when the booth level officers visit the houses. The Aadhaar number of the voters will not be published in voters list or voter slip. Once Aadhaar is linked with the voter ID card which has photo printed on it, it will be possible to avoid mistakes in the voters list", clarified the Electoral officer. Booth officers visit houses as part of the campaign.

Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer Shrikant Deshpande said this will help to establish the identity of voters and ensure authenticity of entries in the voters list. He added that it will help to identify if the same person's name is registered in multiple constituencies or multiple times.
