Jagdeep Dhankhar elected as India's 14th Vice President, Opposition fails to get even 200 votes

NEW DELHI: Jagdeep Dhankhar has been elected as the 14th Vice President of India. NDA candidate Dhankhar received 528 votes. Margaret Alva, the joint candidate of the opposition, got 182 votes. The opposition, which had secured 200 votes, did not even get that much votes. Out of 780 MPs, 725 voted in the Vice President election.

BJP's Sanjay Dhotre and Sunny Deol who were ill did not cast vote. 15 votes were declared as invalid. Following the party's proposal to abstain from the election, only two of the 36 MPs of the Trinamool Congress voted. Sisir Adhikari and Dibyendu Adhikari voted.

The swearing-in ceremony of the Vice President will take place next Thursday. Jagdeep Dhankhar is currently the Governor of West Bengal. He worked as a lawyer and public representative. He is a native of Kithana, Rajasthan. After graduating in Physics, Dhankhar completed his LLB from the University of Rajasthan. He worked as a lawyer in Rajasthan High Court and Supreme Court. In 1987, he was elected as the President of the Rajasthan High Court Bar Association
