KABUL: Sheikh Rahimullah Haqqani, a prominent Afghan cleric who supported the Taliban, was reportedly killed in a suicide attack. He was targeted by a suicide bomber who detonated explosives hidden in a prosthetic leg. The Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the attack. Haqqani was a prominent critic of the jihadist militant groups in Afghanistan. “It’s a very huge loss for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan”, said a senior Taliban official.
Haqqani had been targeted by the IS previously as well. Earlier, he had miraculously escaped two terrorist attacks.
Although a supporter of Taliban, Haqqani did not support all of their activities and stances. He was in favour of providing education to women and children and has openly admitted this in several interviews.
