Dalit boy beaten up by teacher for touching ‘upper caste’ drinking water pot, dies

JALORE: A nine-year-old Dalit boy died on Saturday after being allegedly beaten up by a teacher. The incident took place at a private school in Surana village in the Jalore district of Rajasthan. The dead has been identified as Indra Meghwal, a Class III student. The police have arrested the teacher, Chail Singh (40) in connection with the incident.

Indra was beaten up by Chail Singh on July 20, for touching a drinking water pot meant for upper caste people. He was also abused with caste slurs for drinking the water. Indra, who had sustained severe injuries on his head and ears, was undergoing treatment in the district hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries last day. Following which, Chail Singh was arrested on the complaint lodged by the boy’s parents. Singh has been charged with murder among others. The state education department has asked two officials to probe the matter and submit a report.
