THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The assembly will convene on September 12 or 13 to elect A N Shamseer as the new speaker of the house. Initially, the election was scheduled on September 12, but was later changed due to the inconvenience of deputy speaker Chittayam Gopakumar. Meantime, the opposition has decided to field a candidate against Shamseer.
The opposition views Shamseer as a member of the ruling party, who always interrupts the opposition leader in the house. According to the opposition, he should not be elected unilaterally. If the opposition contests, then a poll will be required. The ruling party has 99 members and the opposition has 41 members in the house.
Although the legislative session concluded on Thursday, the cabinet has not decided to prorogue this session. Therefore, the meeting can only be convened after reaching an agreement among the party leaders. Meantime, A N Shamseer said that he will remain impartial in the house and will consider everyone equally.
