Special watch to be introduced in Kannur Sub Jail to prevent jailbreak, 'Laura' will track inmates, project first of its kind in India

KANNUR: Kannur Special Sub Jail authorities are about to introduce a special project to prevent prisoners from escaping. They have come up with a digital lock watch project to monitor the prisoners inside and outside the jail. The jail authorities are planning to implement trial running with the permission of the Prisons department. The watch on the prisoner's hand will notify in case of a jailbreak. If implemented, the project will be the first of its kind in India. Jail DIG MK Vinod Kumar said that the model project has been submitted to the Home Department.

The watch is being experimented as a solution to the jailbreak of prisoners. The inmates will wear watches instead of handcuffs while they go out. The tracker will give a signal if they goes outside the limit. The GPS information of the prisoner is available in the tracker monitoring. The movement of the inmates is monitored by location.

The project is named as 'Kerala Prison Tracking System'. A wide area network technique called 'Laura' is used for this. The cost of trial running is Rs 2.47 lakh. It has been decided to implement the project as soon as the approval of the Home Department and Prisons Department is received. The project is being implemented in Kannur with modern technology to completely prevent remand prisoners from escaping while appearing in the court and even from the jail.

Special lock

A watch made of metal is worn by locking with a special key. If the inmates try to escape or attack the officers while they are being taken out, the system inside the prison will be immediately notified. The data includes name, jail number, location map, battery level and heart rate of the prisoner. The watch will also have a face locking system.
