THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: State Police chief Anil Kant has sent a circular to the station house officers suggesting that harming and killing stray dogs is punishable offense and people should be made aware in this regard. It has also beem stated in the circular that people should be deterred from killing stray dogs and from taking the law into their own hands. Hurting or killing animals, including stray dogs, is an offense punishable in India. It might lead to imprisonment and payment of fine. Deliberately abandoning domestic dogs on the streets and in deserted places is also an offence. Awareness should be created through Residents Associations so that public does not turn against stray dogs. District police chiefs have also been instructed to ensure this. Animal lovers have earlier come out against cruelty to stray dogs. The police chief had also received many complaints. The Police chief has issued such a circular considering the High Court's directive.
