Youth kills granny, watches TV as she bleeds to death

CHENNAI: A 28-year-old youth has been arrested for murdering his grandmother. The incident happened on Tuesday at Korrukupet in Tamil Nadu. The dead is Vishalakshi aged 70 staying in Karumariamman Nagar Second Street in Korrukkupet. The police arrested her grandson Sathish.

Vishalakshi’s daughter Amudha had to return Rs one lakh which she borrowed from her mother. A verbal dispute over this led to the murder. Vishalakshi was staying alone in her house in Karumariamman Nagar. When Sathish came to his granny’s house, she fed him his favourite lunch of rice and fish curry. After lunch, Vishalakshi asked to return the money his mother had borrowed. Angered over it, he slashed her with a blade and hit her with a hammer. He then bolted the doors of the house and watched TV.

When a neighbour came and asked about the noise, Sathish said that it was from the TV and that his grandmother had gone out. He then watched the TV. He later called his mother and said that she got injured in a fall. Amudha came immediately and saw her mother lying in a pool of blood and rushed her to the hospital, but the doctors informed her dead.

When police reached Vishalakshi’s house, he was watching TV in a drunken condition. The police seized the blade and hammer used to kill her. Sathish was arrested and remanded in judicial custody.

Police said Vishalakshi had been pressing Amudha and Sathish to return the one lakh they borrowed while constructing their new house four years ago. She had borrowed money from others also. As she could not repay the money, Amudha sold her house and settled the money borrowed from others. She gave one lakh to her mother and promised to return the remaining one lakh at the earliest. When she delayed in returning the amount, Vishalakshi used to abuse her daughter and grandson continuously.
