Asha Parekh to be honoured with Dada Saheb Phalke award this year

NEW DELHI: Dada Saheb Phalke Award will be awarded to veteran Bollywood actress and director Asha Parekh. The award was announced by Anurag Thakur, the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting. The award is for overall contribution to the film industry.

The award consists of Rs 10 lakh and a plaque. Draupadi Murmu Award will hand over the award to the actress. Asha Parekh is the first woman to chair the Indian Film Censor Board. She has also directed television serials.


Considered one of the most influential actresses in Hindi cinema, Parekh rose to prominence in the 1960s and 1970s. She started her film career as a child actor. Siddhi, Chiraag, Love in Tokyo, Hum Saya, Kanyadaan, Goonghat were her popular movies among many others.

Asha Parekh has also worked in Gujarati, Punjabi and Kannada films. The Dada Saheb Phalke Award is the highest honor in Indian cinema. Raj Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar, Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna have received it in the past.
