THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Finance Department's approval of the Public Education Department's proposal to increase the school lunch scheme to Rs 10 per child is delayed. It was said that the increase will be made after Onam. The recommendation came after many including the teachers pointed out that the 6-8 rupees set in 2016 was insufficient. The amount for the project is allocated by the center and the state in the ratio of 60-40.

The demand of the teachers is to increase it to 15 rupees, but they have asked for an increase of 10 rupees. Through this, the government will have an additional liability of about 70 crore rupees. It is indicated that the approval is delayed due to the financial crisis.

The headmasters demanded that they be relieved of their duties as the amount was insufficient. The headmasters say that the current amount is not enough to provide lunch including two curries, milk two days a week, eggs one day and bananas for those who do not eat it. They also say that they often spend from their own hands.

Government pays only rice and cooking fee. Vegetables, condiments, gas etc. are to be arranged by the head teacher. Currently, the government is considering the scheme up to 8th class to b extended to 9th, 10th and higher secondary classes.
