STOCKHOLM: The Nobel Prize for Medicine, this year, has been awarded to Swedish geneticist, Svante Paabo for his discovery concerning genomes of extinct hominins such as Neanderthal and its connection with human evolution.

The Nobel Prize ceremony was not conducted for two years due to Covid. However, this year the academy has decided to make it a lavish ceremony. The Nobel Prize money amounts to 10 million Swedish Krona (around $900,357).

Svante Paabo’s examined a bone that is 40,000 years old. He made the discovery that ancient hominins and modern humans had gene exchange around 70,000 years ago. The effects of that ancient gene transfer still have a role in our immunity.
