Four cough syrups likely to be banned in India following WHO alert

NEW DELHI: Following the World Health Organization's (WHO) warning, the Centre is mulling the ban of four Indian-made cough syrups. The action is against cough syrups manufactured by a Haryana-based pharmaceutical company. An investigation has also been announced against the company. The WHO has issued an alert that the medicine could have likely caused the death of 66 children in the African country of Gambia.

An investigation is underway against Maiden Pharmaceutical Company in Haryana. They only export coffee syrup to Gambia. The deaths of children in Gambia have occurred due to kidney failure. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus says this is due to the use of syrup. The four products- Promethazine Oral Solution, Kofexmalin Baby Cough Syrup, Makoff Baby Cough Syrup and Magrip N Cold Syrup are under investigation.
