An accident which should not have happened, HC asks not to repeat it, transport commissioner takes over moral responsibility

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court said incidents like Vadakkanchery bus accident should not be repeated. The carelessness of drivers shown on the road is a cause for concern. The court directed that such incidents should not be repeated in future. Traffic systems are on the loose, KSRTC buses are also violating the rules, the court said. Transport Commissioner S Sreejith appeared in the court as the court directed him to appear.


The transport commissioner informed the court that strict measures are being taken to prevent accidents caused by negligence. The court then asked still accidents continue. An alert was sent to the owner that the tourist bus which caused an accident in Vadakkancherry was over speeding. Sreejith told the court that the website of the motor vehicle department had warned twice. Fines for traffic violations are less. There are 1.67 crore vehicles on the roads and there are only 368 officers, Sreejith told the court. The government also informed the court that enforcement is checking over speeding.


However, the court said there is a competition between buses on the roads and most of the buses are controlled by people close to the government. The court also asked from where they get the courage to drive in such manners. The transport commissioner told the court that the speed governor was being tampered with. The court directed that the entire responsibility of road safety is with the commissioner and that another accident like the Vadakkanchery should not be repeated. The court also directed that strict action should be taken against the drivers who violate the law.

The transport commissioner told the court that he is taking the moral responsibility for the accident. The court said they know that one cannot do anything alone and does not intend to blame the transport commissioner. The court said a new culture is needed on the road and this accident should be taken as an example. The court said accidents due to negligence cannot be accepted. However, the lawyer who is a party in the case told the court that most of the buses belong to the police and that is why they are afraid to take action, blamed the lawyer. The court said that it will be looked into.
