LONDON: Rishi Sunak has been appointed as the 57th Prime Minister of the UK on Tuesday. The youngest PM in Britain's 200 year-history is also the first Indian-origin PM in the nation. He was elected leader of the Conservatives and became Britain's prime minister after Liz Truss stepped down as leader of the government just two months after taking office following the failed tax cut plans. Boris Johnson tried to make a comeback but withdrew at the last minute after realizing the popularity of Rishi Sunak.

Rishi has the heavy responsibility of bringing Britain's economy back from the recession. Sunak also has the distinction of being the first prime minister to be appointed by a new monarch after the death of Queen Elizabeth. Liz Truss took office two days before Queen Elizabeth's death.

Liz Truss delivered her farewell speech after her last cabinet meeting at around 2.45 pm IST today. After this, Rishi Sunak reached Buckingham Palace and met the King and assumed power.

Addressing the public yesterday, Sunak promised to bring stability and unity in the country. The world is also eagerly awaiting the new Prime Minister's maiden speech from the steps of 10 Downing Street after assuming office today.

As a person of Indian origin rose to control the power in Britain, people describe it as a response to Britain's history of colonization. Sunak is married to Akshata Murthy, daughter of Indian tech giant Infosys founder Narayana Murthy.

Prime Minister Modi sent a warm congratulations message on Twitter as Sunak becomes the PM of the UK.

'When you become UK Prime Minister, I want to work together on global issues and implement Roadmap 2030. Wishing you a special Diwali as we transform our historic relationship into a modern partnership,' he tweeted.

Born on May 12, 1980 in Southampton, England, Sunak has been active in politics since 2010. Sunak won the 2015 UK general election from Richmond. He served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary during former Prime Minister Theresa May's second term. Rishi Sunak was a member of the Select Committee on Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and Parliamentary Private Secretary for two years from 2015 to 2017. Later, in 2019, he served as Chief Secretary to the Treasury under the Boris Johnson government. Sunak was promoted in 2020 to Chancellor of the Exchequer, Britain's second most important position.
